Akina Launches Preservative-Free Low Dose Atropine Eye Drops.

We are excited to announce the launch of Akina’s new and long awaited Preservative-Free Low Dose Atropine Eye Drops, designed specifically for children with Pediatric Myopia. For years, our patients have relied on our sterile ophthalmic solution, which included Benzalkonium Chloride (BAK) as a preservative to ensure product sterility. BAK is a common preservative used in approximately 70% of ophthalmic formulations due to its ability to maintain the sterility of multi-dose products. However, we recognize the growing concerns surrounding the long-term use of such preservatives.

Concerns with Long-Term Use of Benzalkonium Chloride

Benzalkonium Chloride has been extensively studied and, while effective at keeping eye drops sterile, research indicates that it may cause several problems when used over long periods. It may damage the surface of the eye by breaking down the protective layer of cells, making the eyes more vulnerable to irritation and infection. Over time, BAK can also slow down the healing process of the eye and cause inflammation, which can lead to discomfort and other eye issues. Because of these potential side effects, especially in treatments meant for children, there is a growing need for preservative-free alternatives.

Benefits of the New Preservative-Free Formula

In response to these concerns, we have developed a Preservative-Free version of our Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops. This new formulation addresses the risks associated with preservatives, offering a safer alternative without compromising on sterility. By eliminating the preservative BAK, we reduce the risk of irritation, allergic reactions, and potential long-term damage to the ocular surface. Our innovative approach ensures that patients receive the benefits of Atropine therapy with enhanced safety and comfort.

Innovative Packaging to Maintain Sterility

To maintain sterility of Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops without the use of preservatives, we have introduced an advanced eye dropper bottle as the container for our preservative free formulation. This innovative eye dropper bottle is designed with a one-way valve system, preventing any contaminated liquid from re-entering the container after a drop has been dispensed. This design ensures that only air can flow back into the bottle, keeping the solution free from contamination throughout its use. Additionally, the bottle features a patented blue tip for precise application and three flow control options to accommodate various formulations. This innovative packaging not only preserves the sterility of the medication but also enhances user experience, making it intuitive and preferred by patients.
